The short answer
YOLO mode is what engineers call the --dangerously-skip-permissions flag in Claude Code. With it,
Claude Code stops asking for approval: it reads files, writes code, runs terminal commands, installs
packages, and executes your full prompt without a single interruption.
The word dangerously is in the flag name for a reason. Running it on your main machine with no isolation is reckless. But set up the right environment first, and it is one of the most powerful tools in a shipping-focused workflow.
The sandbox is non-negotiable
Before YOLO touches anything, put it in a contained environment. Two approaches:
Git sandbox (quick, practical):

Then run Claude Code from there. If anything goes wrong, roll back to the checkpoint.

Inside the container, Claude Code physically cannot touch anything outside it. That is the preferred choice when a session runs scripts or installs packages globally.
Launching YOLO mode
Interactive:

Print mode (for scripts or chaining):

Equivalent flag:
claude --permission-mode bypassPermissions
When it runs, expect three behaviors: self-correction (it reads an error and tries a different approach without waiting), visible package/environment changes, and a clear completion signal with a summary of what it built. Let the session run to completion without interrupting it.
Four starter recipes
The golden rule for a YOLO prompt is to tell Claude the stack, the structure, the expected behavior, and any constraints.
- Full-stack scaffold — "Create a full stack web app using Next.js 14 with the App Router,
Tailwind, Prisma, and PostgreSQL. Set up NextAuth with email login and three pages: login,
register, protected dashboard. Generate the Prisma schema, run the migration, seed one test user,
document env vars in
.env.example, and install all dependencies." - Codebase migration — "Convert this entire JavaScript codebase to TypeScript. Rename files, add

Each prompt is self-contained because the explicit structure is what keeps a long autonomous run on target.
