Claude Sonnet 5 — more agentic work at the Sonnet tier
Sonnet 5 became available across Claude plans and Claude Code with stronger tool use, coding, planning, and introductory API pricing.
Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5 as a more agentic successor to Sonnet 4.6.
What changed
- Stronger planning, tool use, coding, knowledge work, and autonomous execution.
- Availability across Claude plans, Claude Code, and the Claude Platform.
- Introductory API pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through August 31, followed by standard Sonnet pricing.
- An updated tokenizer that can map the same input to roughly 1.0–1.35 times as many tokens, depending on content.
- New cyber safeguards and lower measured rates of several undesirable behaviors than Sonnet 4.6.
Why it matters
Sonnet 5 narrows the gap between lower-cost Sonnet workflows and Opus-level agent tasks. Recheck token budgets during migration because tokenizer changes can alter usage even when prompts stay identical.
